Well it looks like summer has arrived as every body got together on a hot sunny day for round 3 of the Mendip club championships.
The 1/8th section had a good entry and we were able to run two heats.
In qualifying with a lot of help and set up tips by Serpents team driver Mark Green, young Ashley Gouveia set a 19/312.32 which put his Serpent 966 (sponsored by Yeovil Model Cars) on pole position for the A final.

All through qualifying there seemed to be two battles on the go,one between Mike Manning(Yeovil Model Cars) and Ken Napper, the other was Dave Leach and Rob Mckenna.
There was some good racing as all four were going flat out to out do each other and get a good position on the starting grid in the final. New comer Dave Merrick managed to take pole for the B final.

Qualifying over the grid lined up as follows: Ashley on pole, Dave 2nd, Rob 3rd, Mike 4th, Ken 5th and Angelo Bruschini 6th.
The race got under way and the flying Ashley got the hole shot to lead the race. Right behind him havoc broke loose as Mike's car took of from the start and proceeded to go straight into the barrier at the end of the straight (Radio problems I was told after the race).

With Mike out it was now set that the main race was going to be between Dave, Rob,Ken and Angelo. There was some good racing going on until Dave retired with handling problems. Ken was going well and was set to finish in the top three until he was taken off by another driver which cost him some valuable time.
Young Ashley powered his YMC Serpent 966 to victory from start to finish, followed by Rob Mckenna 2nd and Angelo Bruschini in 3rd.

Congratulations to Dave Merrick who took victory in the B final.

Drivers comments after the race:

Ashley:
'My car was stuck in 1st gear and I only had two wheel drive, not a bad result really considering!'

Mike:
'I had radio problems which didn't allow me to turn right at the end of the straight!

Turning right is as important in rc car racing as it is turning left (at the appropriate times of course!!). This lack of steering forced me to use 'the fence' as a means of (rapid) deceleration!
End Of!!! '
